5 Ways To Eat While Saving The World
29 04 2008What should really worry all people right now? Is it the monumental price hike? Is it the war? Is it corruption? Everybody seems to get the wrong idea or reasons to fight for. It’s somehow more than all of the mentioned, or at least, these issues should not come anywhere in the top priority list. So what ought to be the primary worry of the whole world? IT IS THE WORLD ITSELF.
People are so busy trying to fight this and that; justifying this and that; or, making solutions for this and that. But, only a handful is concerned with the risk factors that are killing our only home - Earth. Caring for the environment is something only preschoolers show and tell - “Our planet is slowly being destroyed, we need to plant trees.” - in the class.
Practically, everyone is going to pay soon, like run for higher grounds or so because the ice caps are melting. This would mean that some part of a country or even the country itself will vanish into the great waters. Remember the movie Waterworld? That is really possible as the scientists today have calculated the huge damage that the human race has afflicted the Earth.
However, it is not yet too late. Everybody can still make a difference and change the course of unfortunate time. Every household needs to step up and do its part – SAVE ENERGY and EAT PROPERLY. Yes, it is still very possible. So, how to eat so the Earth could be save sooner than later?
1. Buy locally grown and produced foods. Stop the thought that the tomatoes grown near Mt. Vesuvius, Italy are bigger and better than those grown in local farms. It will not only save the fuel that is used to transport the food, it also keeps the income in the local community. In fact, they reduce the fuel consumption in transporting the goods by one fifth. So, don’t be lazy to search and support local farmers markets.
2. Purchase fresh foods instead of frozen. When food is frozen, it uses ten times more energy to produce.
3. Always buy organic foods. Organic soils absorb and store carbon dioxide at a higher rate than soils from conventional farms. If corns, soybeans and other crops are grown organically, 580 billion pounds of carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere.
4. Avoid using heavily-packaged products. By doing so, 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide as garbage is cut down by 10%.
5. Eat less meat, or turn vegetarian. Cows are one of the major emitters of methane, which is the second gas that contributes to the greenhouse effect. They actually exhale it as they breathe.
These are simple things that will make a great impact in saving our only home in the universe. If our home starts, and then our neighborhood follows, eventually our community will support the cause, just imagine how much energy we could save. We NEED to do something now before actually disasters will sweep everything we own and love.
